Winner - Scrapbooking Outside the Pocket Class at Big Picture Classes

Thanks again to Monica Bradford and Big Picture Classes for offering a free spot in Monica's new class, Scrapbooking Outside the Pocket.

There were quite a few people interested in taking this class and I used a random number generator to choose a winner.

Some people think it is unlucky to be one of the first few to leave a comment on a giveaway post.  It turned out to be lucky for the second commenter.

The winner of a free spot in Monica's class is Jo.  Jo - please email me so I can send you the code you will need to register for your free class

The class begins tomorrow, March 6, so there is still time to register if you weren't lucky enough to be chosen for the free class.  If you would like to see all of the details about the class and register, visit the Big Picture Classes site HERE.

I've been cutting some more shapes with the Explore - still getting perfect circles in lots of different designs.  These are the little extras that went in the Blog Celebration boxes.

The boxes should arrive at their three destinations on Thursday.  Congratulations again to Marilyn, Linda and Suni.  I hope you enjoy discovering ways to use all of the contents.

I want to share a little gift with all of you.  It can be discouraging to post with the hopes of winning a prize and find out that your number did not come up.  So here is a pretty rose to cheer you up and lift your spirits.  It is one of the flowers that I used on my vintage page HERE last week.

This is a screen shot of the rose.  It is a large PNG file and you can download it by clicking the rose image or clicking HERE.  I created the file from a photograph that I took.  If you use it for a project, please let me know - I'd love to see what you make.

Don't forget, today is One Buck Wednesday over at Jessica Sprague.  I picked up this kit for just $1 along with a few other goodies.  Click HERE to go to the One Buck Wednesday page.

Things have been pretty busy but I will try to get to that video showing how to make an embellishment from a photo today - fingers crossed that I have enough time!  I have a few other projects that need finishing...sometimes I wish I could be in two places at one time to get everything done!

  1. The rose is lovely! A reminder that Spring is on her way, even as it is only 20 in Phila this a.m. The winners of your prizes are sure to love their new goodies. The paper lace you are creating with the Explore is amazing. Looking forward to the comparison of all features with your Cameo. BethAnn M.

    1. Hi BethAnn - It does seem like this winter will never end - but I know Spring will be here soon.. The Explore is doing a great job cutting these intricate images. I will be posting my opinions on how the two machines compare..

  4. Congrats to all your winners and thanks for the cut file. I am waiting for your review on the Explore...I read my first one yesterday on Joyslife.com It was interesting to say the least. Can't wait to read yours.

    1. Hi Cathy, The rose is a PNG file but you can easily trace it in the Silhouette software to make a cut file. It can be used for digital scrapping. I read the Joyslife review and in my opinion she didn't really give the machine a fair try before discarding it. No machine is perfect but there are unique features to this one that she ignored. I am still testing things out but will start posting some of the things I do and don't like about it soon.

    1. Thanks Roe - there's always next time and I think people did have some fun with the questions and answers. I wish I could have more winners but since I fund almost everything in the giveaway boxes personally (and pay a lot for postage) three is my limit! I hope you can use the rose on one of your beautiful projects - can you print it and then use your ScanNCut to cut it out?

  6. Congrats to the winners!!!!

I have seen a few comparisons on the explore to the Cameo and only on the machine cutting. I hope you can do a comparison on the software too. I would need the Explore to be way better than the cameo and DE before I can justify buying another machine. I only have room for 1.

I love $1 Wed so I'm headed there right now. Love being able to have the paper in my DE to flood some images with the same paper as the background and being able to make the paper smaller or lighter. Thanks for the link.

    1. Hi Linda
The cutting on the new Explore is great - every bit as good or better than my Cameo (and I thought the Cameo was amazing). The software comparison isn't really a direct comparison. The Design Space functions very differently than most other programs and isn't intended for extensive design creation, just changes and modifications to the existing files. I doubt that it will ever have full fledged drawing capabilities but it has features that no other program offers, particularly in the way complex multi-layered images are handled. I am still sorting through all of the things that you can and can not do...

  7. Congratuations to all the winners! Thanks Diane for being so thoughtful to all us "loosers" :) The rose is beautiful, but I don't really know how to use it? I guess I don't have the right software to do that kind of stuff. Or is it just a printer that would be needed? Is this something that you would use with the new Explore? I'm also looking forward to your comparisons with the Explore. In addition, if we could have a wish list of items to discuss regarding the Explore, these are mine:
1)Design Space compared to Cricut Craftroom/Gypsy.
    2) if you're familiar with Sure Cuts A Lot 2, compared to Design Space.
    3) Embossing with the Explore. Did it come with the embossing tool or is that a later on item?
    4) How the trace option works, or is there something else instead?
    5) Fine printing like a lengthy message inside a card.
Thanks always for a great informational blog!

    1. Hi Sue,
You can just print the rose out and hand cut it if you don't have a machine that supports print then cut. It can be used digitally for projects just like any other png file. I could bring it in the the Explore now by tracing the edge but it will be much better once they add the print then cut since you would then be able to print the full color rose and cut it out.
I will try to address the things on your wish list in my reviews but I don't have a lot of experience with SCAL2.
The scoring tool does not come with the Explore - it is sold separately for about $9 I think (available March 15). I don't think it is meant to emboss, just to lightly score on fold lines to help with the assembly of 3D projects.
The trace option is good for some types of images (solid on a contrasting background) but at this point does handle complex images well - it states right on the screen that they don't recommend using complex images.
Right now there is not a print command but you can use a pen to write out your lengthy message - you will need a fine tip pen like the one I used for the inside of the doily I posted recently. The pen works so much better than the old markers and the dual carriage is a great feature. when printing then cutting is added I imagine it will work very much like the Silhouette software and there will be no problem printing a message in the right spot on the card and then cutting the card out (but I haven' t seen this yet since it was not part of the initial release).
I hope that helps - keep asking questions if I miss something!

    2. Thanks Diane! You've helped tremendously. It sounds like as time goes on with Design Space, more features will be added (at least we hope, right?) I did see your post about the pen, so I will keep that in mind if I end up purchasing the Explore. Regarding tracing, on the Explore intro. video they showed a sketched image of a squirrel (I think it was a squirrel), so I was wondering how that came into use. Maybe that will be an update to their software? Are you going to try the scoring tool when it's available? I'm curious how it works, will it score several lines on one image like a rosette? That would be a great time saving option if so. I'm still trying to decide if the Explore is worth another investment. Your reviews are most helpful! Thanks again.

    1. Nellie - this was actually an image on the Carousel cartridge - hiding contour will work on any design that has interior shapes cut from it. I am not sure why you would not be able to get fonts in Design Space - have you tried calling customer support? I hope they can help.
