Digital Challenge

I have taken on the role of Digital Challenge Coordinator at a new crafting (and more) website called From C to Shining C. I decided to do this because I really enjoy digital scrapping and I want to do more of it. I will be posting a digital challenge every Thursday morning. Some weeks I will make another Cricut related post on the same day - it will depend on how busy my day gets!

If you want to participate in this challenge you will need to join the forum site (linked above) in order to be able to post your project in the gallery.

I work with the Creative Memories StoryBook Plus program for my projects, but the challenges will be general enough to be done in any digital scrapping program.

One of the things I enjoy about digital scrapping is creating things other than scrapbook pages like cards, invitations, posters, etc. Sometimes there are photos involved, but other times I just work with the various digital papers, elements and effects.

Here is my Digital Challenge for today:

Create a calendar page for the month of May. I am working on creating pages for a Creative Memories Picfolio Minutes album so mine is sized at 6.5 x 4.5 inches and in a landscape orientation, since that is the size and orientation of the pages that flip when the album is set up as an easel. If you are not familiar with these albums, here are a couple of photos of my sample page in the album.

The sleeves hold a 4 x 6 inch photo on a 4.5 by 6.5 inch mat but I prefer to make the photo or other page a full 4.5 x 6.5 inch size.

The album is made to stand as an easel by linking the magnetic straps which makes it ideal for a desk calendar - and you can change the pages each year.

Please feel free to make your calendar page in any size you would like.

For my calendar page I used several freebie items from Creative Memories. If you use StoryBook Creator Plus, the white ribbon and the cluster of flowers can be downloaded from my CM personal website - click on "Project Center" - "Digital Project Ideas" - "Digital Freebies" to find these and many others. The digital calendar overlay can be downloaded HERE. The pearly photo holder brad was "harvested" from one of the free digital templates called "Vintage Blues."

The font I used for "May 2009" is "Chocolate Box" which can be downloaded from dafont.com. I applied a basket weave surface to the background which I made in a shade of blue that reminds me of a Tiffany's box (but may be a bit brighter). I used a heavy shadow on all of the elements on the page.

You could add personal information like birthdays and anniversaries to the calendar grid and make a lovely gift for a friend or family member.

Here is a LINK to the FAQs explaining how to participate in these challenges. Feel free to contact me with any questions or suggestions.

If you are new to digital scrapping, challenges are a great way to get started learning about all of the possibilities - I hope some of you will join in the fun!

  1. Hi Diane. I love the calander page that you did, also the holder for the calander on the easel. Is that Creative Memories?
I won't be joining the challenge as I am not creative at all, but love and appreciate all that you have to share, so I will definitely be watching each week to see what you do. Thanks

  2. Diane, I registered on the C to shining C Forums, but it says that it may take up to 2 weeks to be approved... not sure how I can partipate because of that.

Also... how long do the challenges go for? You post it Thursday, when do we have to have it to the gallery by?

    Thanks!

  3. Hi Kasey,

It probably won't take anywhere close to two weeks for approval - there was a big rush at first and I think Ted (the owner) put that up so people wouldn't get upset if they didn't get approved the same day.

From what I understand he is keeping up with registration requests regularly so you should get approved quickly.

This is the first week for the challenges - I imagine the deadline should be within the week and before the next challenge goes up but if you want to do one of the challenges after the new week starts there is no reason you can't do it and post it in the gallery with the proper label.

The challenges are really just meant to motivate everyone to use their software more and learn new things!

  4. Hi Marjorie,

Thanks for the compliment on the page I did. Don't sell yourself short - I am sure you could create something great. Maybe you will be inspired by watching those who do participate(!)

The album I am using is by Creative Memories - it is called a "PicFolio Minutes" album and they are available in black, blue and a Disney red in the album section of the "Shop Products" area on my CM personal website (there is a link to my site in the side column of my blog).

There are some more colors, cream, pink, navy (with pink strap), aqua (with green strap) and "Playful" - a cute pastel striped design in the "While Supplies Last" section.

I really like these albums - they have 12 pages (so 24 sides) and you just slide the matted photos in the sleeves - quick and easy. The easel feature is really nice for a desk or table. They make great gifts and are only $20.

  5. Thanks Diane. I am off to your site to look at the albums. I will be out of town for several weeks, so will wait to order until I return home. Yes, I think they would be great gifts.
