October's Bright Blue Weather

We had the most amazing weather today - the temperature reached 77 degrees and the sky was a bright blue with many unusual cloud formations.  I am trying to defeat a cold so I was inside most of the day.  When I walked down to the mailbox this afternoon, I just had to come back to the house and grab my camera to try to capture the incredible skies.

I thought I'd share a few photos with you.  I was reminded of a poem my Mother used to recite (she loved poetry and also wrote a lot of poems).  It is by Helen Hunt Jackson (1830-1885) and is called October's Bright Blue Weather.  I found a copy of the poem on poemhunter.com

O suns and skies and clouds of June,
And flowers of June together,
Ye cannot rival for one hour
October's bright blue weather;

When loud the bumblebee makes haste,
Belated, thriftless vagrant,
And goldenrod is dying fast,
And lanes with grapes are fragrant;

When gentians roll their fingers tight
To save them for the morning,
And chestnuts fall from satin burrs
Without a sound of warning;

When on the ground red apples lie
In piles like jewels shining,
And redder still on old stone walls
Are leaves of woodbine twining;

When all the lovely wayside things
Their white-winged seeds are sowing,
And in the fields still green and fair,
Late aftermaths are growing;

When springs run low, and on the brooks,
In idle golden freighting,
Bright leaves sink noiseless in the hush
Of woods, for winter waiting;

When comrades seek sweet country haunts,
By twos and twos together,
And count like misers, hour by hour,
October's bright blue weather.

O sun and skies and flowers of June,
Count all your boasts together,
Love loveth best of all the year
October's bright blue weather.

We are expecting a significant drop in temperature to something more seasonal by the weekend.  I hope it stays relatively mild for the trick-or-treaters on Sunday.

I received a second package yesterday and I am figuring out just how to use the items that were in the box.  I need a bit more practice and then I will share my progress with you...sometime next week...

  5. Beautiful pictures and I love the poem. My mother also remembers a lot of poetry ( she's 81). Back in the day of their schooling, learning poetry was a must. Thanks for sharing.

  7. Super pretty pictures and what a beautiful poem. Would love it if you shared more poems with us!

    I have to share with you my purchase from M's yesterday. I've been loving your cards with the MS punch around the page, so bought my 1st and 2nd ones! I picked up the bubble bath set and the cracked glass set - both on clearance, then used my Oprah coupon to buy an MS ribbon punch. Really cool how it punches both sides. Thanks for inspiring us! A crafting I go this weekend!
