Christmas Around the Clock - Luminaries

Welcome to the 10 AM project for the Christmas Around the Clock Challenge at Cuttlebug Challenge. Be sure to check out all of the great Christmas projects and try making some of them for yourself.

This is a quick and easy project with a lot of impact.  These charming little luminaries are made using the A Child's Year cartridge - one of my all time favorites as you know if you are a regular reader of my blog.

I used this image of the children carrying a tree for the luminary.

I worked with the sizing to make the design work so it would be 10 inches long and could be scored at every 2 1/2 inches.

I used some K & Company double sided Christmas paper so I could flip one set of children and use both patterns.

I was careful with the size so to make it possible to use the vellum that you can purchase in an office supply store at 8 1/2 x 11 to help keep this project less expensive.  I think that lots of these little luminaries scattered around a room would be lovely.  I cut a three inch strip of vellum and adhered the row of children to it using a glue pen.

Then I scored the strip at every 2 1/2 inches using my Scor-Pal.  You can see that there is a one inch strip of vellum left at the end.

I added some score tape to the flap and then trimmed away the excess.

If you burnish the seam it is barely noticeable.  I used these battery operated candle for the light source - these should not be lit with an open flame!

There are some other images on A Child's Year that would work well for luminaries.  I'll probably try them out before Christmas!

Here is my file to download if you want to save yourself a little time.  This really is a quick and easy file to make on your own so give it a try if you want a challenge.

  6. Ooops ... you may need to correct your instructions. First you say you score at 2.5 inches, then later you say 1.5. Looks like 2.5 inches is correct when looking at your photo of the project laying on the ScorePal.

I think this is a great project - I made some using the frame feature on the Sports Mania cart for a sports banquet & everyone loved them!

  8. These are beautiful Diane love how you used this image, there are so many delightful images on this cart. Just a note shouldn't that say score at every 2 and a half inches not 1 and a half, I am not being picky just know you have alot of people who follow your instructions, hope you don't mind me letting you know.

  9. those are adorable! I used to live in Albuqueque, now I am in Iowa and nobody does luminaries like they do in the southwest. I am going to do these this year. They are so cute!! Thanks for reminding me of the beauty of them!

  11. KarenLinPA -

Yes you are right - I proofread but my mind saw what I "knew" and this slipped by me. Thanks for letting me know - I have fixed the post.

I hope it was obvious if anyone started to make these - you wouldn't want to score right through the children!

  13. FABULOUS idea, Diane! I have lots of these little battery-op candles I got at the dollar store, so this is definitely a project for me. I don't have A Child's Year cart yet -- this may send me running to the store!

  17. I visited my 88 year old mom last week in NY. She hosts an annual holiday gathering so I made her some of these to give to her freinds. I used your cut on red vellum and did another with 4 small trees on white vellum. I'm hosting a workshop for a women's club luncheon. We will make 40 of these to decorate our tables. Thanks so much for a wonderful idea.
