Turkeys and Apples

October is turning out to be a very busy month.  For nearly four years I posted every day on this blog but right now there are lots of other things going on that also need my attention.  My husband's parents are downsizing to a condo and we just made a quick trip to the family farm upstate New York to help move some things that won't fit in the new place.

On Sunday morning, we looked out the kitchen window and saw this group of turkeys.  At first I thought they were wild but then I remembered that the neighbor at the farm across the street raises turkeys.

They stayed pretty close together as they strutted around the lawn.

The turkeys are loud and not shy at all - they came right up on to the back step!

My father-in-law had gone out to pick some apples - it turns out he is a pretty good turkey chaser!

He shooed the turkeys across the road but they kept trying to sneak back!

I did manage to get one clear photo of the male with his feathers fluffed out.  I'll be turning this into a digital element so I can use the image for Thanksgiving projects.

The rains came before we started on our way back to Boston.  I got a few photos of the apples on the trees.  There is a good crop this year.

These apple images show the importance of editing and cropping.  The original photo of the red apples is above.

Here is the first crop of the photo.  I eliminated some of the distracting parts of the background to focus on the wet apples.

A second crop highlights just one of the apples.

This final tight crop on just a part of the apple is my favorite.

It started to rain too hard for me to take more photos and we had a long drive home through more rain.  I do love the look of the photos with the raindrops on the apples.  I have some crafty plans for these images..

Did you make any cards on World Card Making Day last Saturday?  If you are going to enter the Paper Crafts Magazine contest, you still have a few days to get your entries finished.  They must be postmarked by October 15th to be eligible for the contest - see the full details HERE.

Blitsy has expanded their offerings and updated their website.  Now there are even more bargains to choose from each week.  New deals are posted every day, Monday - Friday, and there are more types of craft supplies included in the sales.  If you haven't joined Blitsy yet, you should check it out HERE.  You can save up to 70% on some items but the more typical savings is 30-40%.  Sales last seven days or until the item is "blitsed" (sold out).

Once you have registered, you can get a referral link to share with your family and friends and earn credits to use in the store.  I appreciate it when you use my LINK to sign up since the credits help my crafty budget - thanks!

This week I am participating in the Tim Holtz Creative Chemistry 102 class.  I have been learning a lot and will be sharing some of my class tags after the class is over.  If you are interested in Creative Chemistry you can get the details at Online Card Classes HERE.  You do need to take the 101 level class first.

True Scrap 5 begins tomorrow so I be extra busy trying to keep up with everything live online (I will miss some of the classes but the videos are available whenever I want to catch up - that's the great thing about online learning!).  If you are still thinking about joining this event, you can get all of the details HERE.  There is a pre-event "virtual pajama party" tonight!

Have a great Thursday!

  1. I think I have been following your blog since almost its beginning. I have often wondered how you bloggers kept it up daily or almost daily and still have a family life with time left over to craft! You have my utmost admiration for all you do! That being said, I know all your other followers would agree: Family comes first! And, although we might be disappointed when there isn't a current posting, that is fleeting because we know you are doing what you need to be doing, taking care of yourself and your family.

    1. Thanks Cathy for the kind words. This has just been an odd year with so many things happening in the family. It's not just the crafting but all of the extra steps that go into blogging (photos, editing, directions, etc.) make it hard to keep posting everyday. But you are right - family first!

  2. Great turkey and apple photos. Where in upstate NY is this farm? My successful CSA farmer daughter ( mudcreekfarm.com and farmererin.blogspot.com/ ) is moving from Rochester NY to Chatham NY to live with her boyfriend and wants to lease some farmland. Any interest?

    1. Thanks Robin. The farm is actually in the Rochester area - to the east in Williamson. We have friends who had a house in Chatham, New York years ago - I always forget that that area is also called upstate!

  3. Hi Diane, Love the pics of the turkeys and apples. Hope you didn't get too wet...
I am also participating in the Chem 102 class. I am really enjoying it. Have not had time to try much of the techniques but looking forward to playing with my colors :)

    1. Hi Marilyn - I did get wet but that's just a hazard of taking photos outdoors this time of year. I have watched all of the videos for Creative Chemistry 102 but need to find time to try the techniques - there have been some great ones! It's good that we can go back and re-watch after we try things to pick up the tips again. Have fun playing!
