Easter Egg Card (file to share)

Easter is early this year so today I have another Easter card to share.  I designed the egg on the front of this card using only the free basic shapes in Cricut Design Space.

It is taking longer than I ever imagined it could to get our house fully settled. Most of the rooms are done but there is still a fair bit of chaos in the storage areas and my craft studio.

While I was sorting through a box of adhesives, I found some Action Wobbles and this gave me the idea to make a card with an Easter Egg that moves.

If you have never seen one of these in motion, it is a bit difficult to imagine how they work - so I made a quick little video of the egg in motion.

The Action Wobble is clearly labelled so you know which side to attach to your image and which side is the base to be attached to your card.  I got my Wobbles at a small local store, you can also find them online.

The "egg" is an oval with four layers.  I cut them from Core'dinations Gemstone cardstock which has a beautiful pearly sheen.

This screen shot shows the card design.  I add rectangles to represent the card base and layer just to help visualize the card.  In most cases, I cut these with a trimmer to use my cardstock more efficiently.

For the sentiments, I used this stamp set that comes with the "Artfully Sent" Close To My Heart Cricut cartridge.  There are lots of combinations for both the front and inside a card.  If you want more information about this cartridge you can find it on my friend Joy's CTMH website HERE.

I stamped the "Happy Easter" on the front card layer with Versamark ink and heat embossed it with white embossing powder.  I wasn't happy with the result - the sentiment is tiny and the texture of the cardstock (and also some excess pressure on the stamp) made it a bit difficult to read.  So I stamped it again on a strip of the reverse side of the cardstock, cut a small flag end and added a gem.

It just wasn't my day for stamping - I also managed to get a few ink spots on the inside of the card when I stamped the second sentiment.

Fortunately, I had the center cuts from the yellow and purple egg layers sitting on my table and I was able to use these to cover the smudges.  I actually like the inside of the card better with this extra decoration - sometimes mistakes lead you to improve on your original plan!

I used my old Creative Memories "fancy" corner rounder on the green card layer.  The second version of "Happy Easter" is adhered directly over the messy original embossing.

I think this card would be fun to use for an Easter Egg Hunt invitation.  You could also make a variation with a detachable egg ready to hang as an ornament on a branch or in a window.

You can get many variations of the egg by changing the colors of the four layers.  I chose pastels for this card but more dramatic combinations would be interesting too.

True Scrap 7 individual classes available now

Happy Easter Card (file to share)

Easter is exceptionally early this year so I thought I would share another Easter card.  This card is relatively simple to make but be aware that there are a lot of tiny fiddly pieces to glue so I wouldn't recommend it for mass production!

When you click to insert images in Cricut Design Space there are always some "featured images" that pop up right away.  These tend to change to suit the seasons and holidays.  Sometimes you find images you may have forgotten about and see them in a new way.  This wreath image is labelled "Easter Frame" and is from the Holiday Cakes cartridge, image #M410F1.  I have owned this cartridge for a long time and it is also included in the  Cricut Access.  (links to Cricut in this post are affiliate links which means I will be paid a commission if you purchase something after clicking on the link - your price stays the same. The image includes a shadow layer so I was able to use this to create a shaped card base.  I eliminated the center cut with the contour option (you could also weld a circle to the wreath to black out the center) and then duplicated and flipped the shape, adding a rectangle to make a stronger area for the fold.

I sized the card to be 5.5 inches tall but did not change the proportions so the card is not quite square (the width is about 5.24 inches).  I also added and attached a score line for folding the card.

The sentiment for the card is also from the Holiday Cakes cartridge "Happy Easter" image #M43C45.

Since I used the shadow layer to create the card base, the green shadow fits the front of the card perfectly.

I inked the edges of the shadow layer just a bit to add some definition at the edges.

It is very easy to get confused about the direction  for placing all of the small top layer purple pieces on the yellow wreath layer.  If you save the offcut and use it as a guide for placement it is much easier to get everything aligned correctly.

I got tired of gluing the tiny bits and decided to use some gems for the three tiny dots on two of the flowers.  The offcut made it simple to place them just where the designer intended.

The assembled wreath is a little unusual since I didn't use any green for the top so all of the leaves and stems are yellow and purple. 

I decided that the green shadow layer was  good way to ground this whimsical design.

Once the card was assembled (fair warning again - this will take longer than you think!) all I needed to do was to add the sentiment in the center white section.

I chose a darker purple glitter cardstock for the sentiment and placed it at a slight angle inside the wreath.

Here is a top view of the card sitting flat on some pink cardstock.  I chose to have the extra rectangle for a strong side instead of trying to weld the two wreath shadow shapes with a very small amount of overlap.

Because of the unusual shape, this card will not stand straight and even by itself.  You can mail it in an envelope for a 5 x 7 card to save the postage surcharge for a square shaped envelope.  If you don't want it to slide around too much in the envelope just adhere the inside of the envelope to itself along on edge.  (If you don't understand what I mean, please leave a comment and I will try to add some photos to make it clear).

More work is happening at our new house so I haven't been able to post as often as usual. I hope that in a few more weeks all of the renovations will be done (or at least we will take a break for the next few months).  My craft studio is getting more settled but is not yet "ready for it's close-up."  I have had many requests to show my space and I will - as soon as I get things finished!

New Hampshire Primary (Digital Scrapbook Page)

Today is Super Tuesday, the day when the greatest number of US states hold presidential primary elections.  If we still lived in Massachusetts we would be voting today, however, since we moved to New Hampshire last year, we participated in the "first in the nation" presidential primary on February 9th.  This is not a political post, but I thought it would be a good day to share a digital layout I did to commemorate our first time voting in New Hampshire.

This year marked the 100th Anniversary of the New Hampshire Primary (1916-2016).  We voted at our local elementary school, in the gymnasium.

There was a very interesting poster showing the old style ballot boxes that were used back in 1892.

It may have been a coincidence, but the curtains on the voting booths were very stiff and seemed new.  The gym floor was carefully covered.  I was surprised to see a total of 50 cubicles.  I suppose at the busy times this many are needed but there was not a line and only a few people were voting when we arrived.

 The official notice to voters also acknowledged the 100th Anniversary Year.

New Hampshire allows voters to register on the day of the election.  If you register as an Independent you can choose which party ballot you wish to vote on.

As I struggled to take a selfie (a skill I have not acquired!) a fellow voter offered to snap a picture of my husband and me after we voted.  People are very friendly here.

 I was surprised to see so many names on the ballots. 

As I mentioned, the polling place was an elementary school gym.  This sign was posted in the gym and we both thought that perhaps the candidates should adhere to these rules too!

Here is a screen shot of the two page spread of this digital layout.  I used some patriotic paper and just a simple grid of photos along with the titles and text in white with some shadows to improve legibility.

As we are still settling in and working on more house projects at our new home,  I find it easiest to do digital scrapbook pages.  I enjoy making cards and 3D projects in paper but the flexibility of digital scrapbooking gives me chances to try endless options before I commit to a final page.

There are lots of interesting things about our new state.  You may or may not know that the motto is "Live Free or Die" - pretty intense!  I had to laugh when I saw this sign in a local shopping plaza.  Unfortunately, the diner was closed down. I would have liked to meet the owner with this sense of humor.

After celebrating Leap Day yesterday, I hope your March is off to a great start!
