Some amazing paper cuts!
It was quite a busy day - the warm weather continued so I was determined to get all of the outdoor lights set up before the snow comes (predicted for later this weekend). I did get spotlights for the tree in the front yard so now we can see the ornaments at night. This is the best picture I could get without setting up the tripod and I was too worn out from all of the climbing up and down ladders and sorting lights - I'll wait until the snow comes for a night time outdoor shot. If you want to see the ornaments in the daytime, here is a LINK to the post with the photos.
I hope you will enter for a chance to win the EZ View products from the Original Scrapbox. One person will win an EZ View Desktop from the entries on my blog and then will have a chance to win the EZ View Desk. All of the details are in the post from earlier today (today is a two post day). Be sure to visit The Original Scrapbox website - they are counting hits and will donate a desk to one or two charities if they receive enough traffic. You can even nominate a charity to win an EZ View Desk - all details are in the original post.
To enter - go to the original post (here is a LINK) and follow the directions. Please be sure to leave a way for me to contact you if you win - there have already been a few people who left no contact info. If you can be emailed through your blogger profile that is fine. If you are worried about spam just spell out the @ "at" and the . "dot" when you type the email address. Only comments on that original post will be included in the giveaway entries so please do not post an entry comment on this or any other newer post - I hate to see anyone miss the chance to be included.
I have been enjoying looking at some of the blogs of people who have entered. Remember - you do not have to have a blog to enter - there are several possible ways to enter and the most important and easiest one is to visit the Original Scrapbox site and then leave a comment on the original post telling me what item you like best.
As I look at blogs I often start clicking on the links that people have to other blogs and then on those links and I find all sorts of interesting things. I wish I could post a photo from one blog that I looked at tonight but I don't want to violate any copyright. If you like intricate paper cuts and pop ups you should definitely take a look at this site - Cutted Paper Arts. There are only a few posts - all on February 8, 2008 and there are only pictures posted but they are definitely worth a look! There have been well over 5 million hits according to the counter. I hope you enjoy looking at these amazing pop up paper cuts. I'd love to have the time to sit and figure out how to do one - maybe in the new year,
Have a great weekend . Tomorrow I'll be sure to have a more "crafty" post.

just a little more glitter....
We had an amazingly warm day here - a record setter. The only two places in the US that were warmer today were Florida and Hawaii! I took advantage of the great day to do some more outdoor decorating. We already have the candles in the windows (if you live in New England I think this is required by the deed to your house).
We don't have a large evergreen in the front yard but we do have a maple tree. I used to wrap the entire tree, branch by branch, with strands of white lights. One year I had 2100 lights on the tree! My neighbors were entertained by the sight of me climbing the tree to do this.
Last January, I bumped into a clearance price on large outdoor ornaments and decided to try them out (and save some electricity as well as wear and tear on me). I still had to use ladders and do some climbing but it was fun to try something new.
There are 24 onion shaped ornaments - six each of red, blue, silver and gold. It seemed like so many when I bought them but I probably could have added another dozen.
They are hung with wire and I hope the winds don't loosen them before the end of the season. I think I will need to add a couple of spotlights to make them sparkle after dark.
I didn't remember exactly what they looked like and I was happy to see that they have bands of glitter - I am really having a lot of glitter fun this week! Several people have asked me about holiday decorations - we put things up gradually throughout December so I certainly do not have it all up yet. If you are new to my blog and didn't see the last holiday season here is a LINK to the December posts. The first one shows some decorations and there are also some posts with files you might enjoy.
I found these ornaments in the attic when I went to get the outdoor decorations. These are jolly old elves from my childhood. I may try to make some more with modern materials - these are definitely worse for wear but they bring back a lot of memories.
These little houses and the bird would be fun to recreate. I am sure I can use my Cricut and Design Studio to help in this project.
These two are slightly scary! I am not sure if I will try to reproduce them....
I have an exciting surprise for tomorrow - if you are a subscriber and get my posts by email, you may want to click over to the blog to see what is happening after 8:00 a.m. I'll have a regular post later in the day too.

Glitter, glitter, everywhere!
Last week my friend Joy (known as HappyHappyJoyJoy) shared a great idea on her Christmas with the Cricut blog. Joy, Tammy and Melanie have a terrific blog with all sorts of wonderful ideas and projects and lots of giveaways - if you have not seen it here is a LINK - be prepared to spend hours there!
Joy found a fantastic idea for making glitter ornaments and made a video with her daughter. Here is a LINK to the post about the ornaments. Her daughter is so cute and does a great job demonstrating. I couldn't wait to give this a try - I went out and bought the "secret ingredient" the next morning.
I made some ornaments right away and today my neighbor came over for a glitter playdate! We had lots of fun and made a lot of ornaments. If you have a Michael's nearby, the glass ornaments are half price this week. They come in various sizes - the smaller sizes have more ornaments per box. I had some on hand and bought some more (and may even go back to stock up - these are so much fun to do!).
Nancy used traditional red, green and gold for her ornaments. I had done some of these a few days ago and today I tried some other ideas.
First I tried some coarse glitter - the same glitter I used for the "snow"cards I shared recently (here is a LINK). It does not stick nearly as well as the fine glitter and I ended up with a mess! I dumped out the glitter that wasn't sticking and added a couple of colors of glitter to fill in all the gaps - red and green on one and red and blue on another. The multi-color effect is very pretty but it is difficult to get a nice mixture with smaller areas of color. It works best to just add a bit of glitter at a time and to try to send it in several directions as you pour it into the ornaments.
Next I tried some fine glitter with a iridescent crystal effect. The lighter color glitter was tricky because the gaps or thin areas are much more noticeable. On the first one (left side) there were so many gaps that I tried adding additional colors again - both red and green. It is hard to get a good photo but the end result was pretty. The ornament on the right has only the crystal glitter and there are some thin spots but they are not extreme.
Then I got the bright idea to try adding more floor finish to "recoat" the thin areas. I may not have waited long enough for the first layer to dry - or the newly added finish may always dilute the existing layer. At any rate, I poured out the extra floor finish and a lot of the crystal glitter slid out in chunks creating a mottled look. It was thicker at the hole as the glitter drained out. I then added some fine green glitter to fill in all of the gaps. I think this one looks like it has a snow topping.
These two ornaments were made using glitter I got on sale last fall after the Halloween items were marked down. The colors actually work well for Christmas so check to see if there is any "fall" glitter in your local stores. I saw it marked down 90% this year - a great bargain!
The first color is "cinnabar" which is actually a sort of mixture of red and silver/gold. It makes me think of candy canes.
The second color is "fire opal" which is a coppery orange and will blend nicely with many holiday color schemes. It has a golden look and would look great with a bright chartreuse shade of green.
Here are all of the different colors and variations I have tried so far. They are just so pretty even without any ribbons or decorations added to the top of the glass. You can do lots of personalization and these would make great gifts.
I don't recommend reusing the glitter too many times as you fill each ornament and tap out the excess. The glitter tends to soak up some of the finish and form "globs" (but you might be able to use these in another project).

While I was busy with glitter, I decided to try another idea that I had a few days ago. I took a piece of clear packing tape and stretched it across a couple of paper towels, sticky side up. I taped the large piece to the counter on both ends and then dumped a lot of glitter on the tape. I used my fingers to spread it around and to make sure the entire surfaced was covered.
Even though the tape is covered in glitter it is still somewhat transparent. Next time I do this I'll use a large piece of smooth paper - it is difficult to collect the excess glitter from a paper towel.
Finally, I stretched the glittered package tape, glitter side up along the counter and taped the ends down with regular tape. Then I carefully placed another strip of packing tape on top of the glittered tape. It is tricky to get the two perfectly aligned - it might be good to do this with a helper.
So why did I want to do this? My idea was that I could use the tape to punch out shapes to use for embellishments. I first tried a large simple heart shaped punch - it punched easily so I decided to try a more complicated and delicate design. The stars with the thin rays at the top of this photo also punched easily.
I have some more ideas on how to use this glittered tape - I hope to share a few of the projects I have in mind soon. In the meanwhile, I think you would really enjoy making these ornaments. The supplies are not too expensive - the floor finish was about $6 and that bottle will last for many, many ornaments! The glitter and plain glass ornaments can probably be found on sale or purchased with a coupon. Inexpensive, quick and pretty - a great project! Many thanks to Joy for finding it and sharing the information.

Sweet Treats cupcake holder
I got the Sweet Treats cartridge at Michael's recently (here is a LINK to my review including photos of the handbook pages). Sweet Treats is full of cute cupcakes, ice cream, flowers and other treats. As I mentioned in my review, one of the disappointing things about the cartridge is that the 50 cupcake holders are identical with different decorations to cut from the shift of each key. It seems like a missed opportunity to create more interesting cuts.
Now that Sweet Treats has been added to Design Studio you can make your own alterations. I did a quick experiment just to try one possibility.
This is the basic cupcake holder. On a 6 x 12 mat, the largest size you can cut is 5 1/2 inches. This is a bit too small for the average cupcake, let alone the large cupcakes that are popular now. It will make a cute holder for other treats or a mini cupcake.
For my experiment, I used a heart from the cartridge and made a row of five hearts, adjusting the size to fit on the side. I copied and pasted the row of hearts and rotated it to fit on each side, taking care to keep the distance from the top consistent. I also added a large heart to the center of each side.
I do not like the "tick marks" that tell you where to score. They tend to make the edges look sloppy after you fold the item - particularly if you use a white core cardstock. I nearly always use "hide selected contour" to eliminate these marks. It is usually very simple to figure out where to score and fold an item. The lines are visible but very pale blue in this screen shot. Right now, simply checking weld on the item will also eliminate the tick marks but I usually hide them in case a future update preserves the lines in a welded object.
This screen shot of the preview on a blank page shows the adapted cut. Since there will be the row of cut out hearts along the top of each side, I added a small rectangle to cut off part of the tabs. The part that remains is perfectly adequate to hold the shape together and will not block the cut out design. I checked weld on the holder for these previews to eliminate the color and make it easier to see the shapes that will be cut out.
After removing the extra paper, the holder looks like this on the mat. The tabs have been adjusted by the small rectangle cuts. I discovered that my rectangles were a bit too small and had to trim a tiny sliver by hand so be sure to pay attention to the angles to see how the tabs will fold in if you try this.
After lifting the holder from the mat, I had all of these cute hearts to save for other projects.
Here is the adapted holder ready to score and fold. You can do all sorts of cut outs for different holidays or to personalize the holder with initials or names.
I did the scoring on my Scor-Pal. It is easy to line up the base line folds and the scores for the flap folds just have to be turned at a bit of an angle to produce the flared shape of the design.
Here is the straight side view of the holder. a cellophane bag of candy tied with a ribbon would look cute in this holder - maybe the candy conversation hearts for Valentine's Day!
I have other ideas for ways to use Design Studio to make these holders more interesting. I'd love to see any ways you have changed the basic design for your projects.
