Super Quick Silhouette Software Tip

Did you ever have an experience where you were talking to someone and you both thought you were talking about the same thing and then it suddenly became clear that you were talking about something completely different?

I was helping a friend with a question about the print and cut process with the Silhouette Studio software.  I kept telling her to click on the scissors icon in the top bar to open the Cut Style window so she could turn off one of the cut lines.  She kept telling me that when she clicked on the scissors, the design would completely disappear.  I was having a hard time figuring out how that could be happening.  Her software was up to date and nothing else seemed to be acting oddly...

Then we had an "aha" moment.  She was clicking on the scissors at the top left side of the screen and I meant that she should use the scissors on the top right side of the screen.  I always use the right click of my mouse to do "cut," "copy," or "paste."  I had never even noticed that there were icons on the top left side that you can use for these functions.

Here is a screen shot to show you how we got so mixed up...just click on the image to make it bigger and you will see the two sets of scissors.

So - we both were clicking on scissors.  We just had a "failure to communicate."

I have had a lot of people asking me why I haven't made videos for a long time.  This experience convinced me that it might be a good idea to start doing some short videos again.  Please let me know in a comment if you would find this helpful for the Silhouette Studio program or any of the other programs that I use.

Just remember...

don't use these scissors...

don't use these scissors...

use these scissors to open the window to set the cut lines!

use these scissors to open the window to set the cut lines!

Video would have stopped this miscommunication before it could even begin...

I'll be driving south today so I won't be online very much.  The weather here has been abnormally mild so I won't have to worry about snow on the trip.  We actually got the outdoor decorations down today -in January!  (usually it is too cold and snowy to take them down).  The big ornaments from the front tree had to dry off for a while and I thought they were pretty sitting on the front steps.

Thanks for all of the good wishes for my Dad - I am eager to see him in person since it can be difficult to have more than a short conversation on the phone these days.

  1. I'm new to the Cameo and software, I search You Tube all the time looking for videos to help me figure out both so I would welcome more videos.

  2. I've had my cameo for awhile now and still have not used it. So, your help would be greatly appreciated. I've read that I need to get the software in order to work with SVG files. Is that true?

  4. I would love videos. Your tutorials are great, but I seem to understand and remember better when I see something "in person." And being able to watch again would really help. Thank you!

  6. Yes, please, a video would help us, "newbies" a lot. I haven't played with my Cameo much as I am "computer challenged" and need more instructions. Watching a video would help more than the writing about it. Need to see how it is done. I wish you would come out with a video that has complete instructons on how to use it. I know that takes lots of time on your part, but it sure would help us "see" what is going on. Thanks for everything you do to help us do our "best".

  9. I just purchased the Silhouette in December and could really use some help. I am one to just jump in and start cutting, but I will say it is not exactly that easy to figure out.

  10. i was laughing all the while reading this. i knew what happened as soon as you said her design disappeared. i knew about the 2 scissors, and thought to myself that could easily get used for the the wrong purpose. i was surprised there were two 'scissor' images in the same program, with totally 2 different functions. i would personally love if you would do video tutorials. i printed out the help manual, i don't know why, because the terminology throws me for a loop and i've lost all ability to learn what they're 'saying'. i'm a hands-on and visual learner...and 'that's that!

  14. I would love it if you would be willing to make some Silouhette videos. I am new to Silouhette Cameo but so far I love it. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. The designs that you do with your cameo are awesome. I would love to know how you come up with your beautiful designs. I really think that you should submit your designs to Silouhette. they would be snapped up in no time. Hope your dad is doing better. Thank you so much for sharing what you do on your blog. I look forward to all of your posts.
